Inkandescent is an independent publisher founded in 2016 to shine a light on writers mainstream publishing too often ignores—LGBTQ+, working-class, those from black and brown communities and other underrepresented voices whose stories are so important to shaping our culture but so rarely make it to print.

From our first book, Threads (longlisted for the Polari First Book Prize), to our landmark anthology MAINSTREAM, we have launched careers, challenged industry gatekeeping, and proven that readers want bold, diverse writing. Many of our emerging authors have since secured agents, commissions and further publications—because someone believed in them first.

We also create live literary spaces. BOLD Queer Poetry Soirée is one of London’s most vibrant queer literary events, bringing generations together and building community through joy, resistance and art. With support, we are ready to take this work across the UK…

Inkandescent’s reputation has grown faster than our resources. Our books are launched at flagship venues, covered by national media, and supported by major cultural figures—yet we operate without salaries, from a kitchen table.

Small presses are closing. Costs are rising. Mainstream publishing is becoming more risk-averse. Without funding, vital stories will go untold. This is the moment: your support will decide whether the light stays on—or goes out.
